Most likely something is preventing your water heater from making hot water. If you have a gas water heater, check to be sure that the pilot light is operating. If you have an electric water heater, check that your water heater is getting power. Be careful working with gas or electricity. If you don't feel safe, call a plumber.

There are different maintenance requirements for conventional gas and electric water heaters and with tankless water heaters. Check your manufacturer's recommendations and follow them carefully. However, in general terms, you'll want to drain sediment from your water heater tank on an annual basis and tankless water heaters will require at least an annual descaling to keep them operating efficiently.
